Studio Practice Modules
Artist Residency in Kanazawa:
Study Buddhist Sculpture in a Working Studio
This program is designed for experienced artists and serious learners seeking to deepen their practice.
You will study in a professional, working studio, refining precision carving techniques and mastering the use of traditional Japanese tools.
Sharing Techniques and Underlying Knowledge
In addition to four days of practical instruction per week, I provide access to our studio’s collection of books and archival materials tailored to your specific interests and needs.
Through professional dialogue, I share specialized knowledge that forms the foundation of the craft—such as the stylistic nuances between Buddhist sects and the unique characteristics of different woods.
My studio offers a practical environment for those who seek to go beyond simple technical training, allowing you to integrate history and expertise
About the Artist / Instructor
BUSSI / 仏師
Toshiharu Sakagami / 坂上俊陽
Toshiharu is a Buddhist sculptor with over twenty years of carving experience, trained in the traditional woodcarving techniques of Inami—one of Japan’s most renowned carving towns.
A busshi is a woodcarving artist who primarily creates Buddhist statues for temples and private altars, and Toshiharu continues this tradition in his own practice.
He currently works from his private studio in Kanazawa, where precise hand‑carving skills are essential.
His work incorporates traditional tools as well as techniques in urushi lacquer and gold leaf.
While producing more than twenty commissioned pieces each year for his clients, He also provides individualized instruction for artists from Japan and abroad, teaching both foundational and advanced techniques.
About the Studio & Stay Space
You will stay in a private room directly connected to the studio, allowing you to focus on your work at any time.
The environment is quiet, intimate, and ideal for both beginners and professional artists seeking concentrated practice.
Experience Kanazawa
